A Door from the Heart of the Atlas Mountains

This beautiful single-panel Moroccan door originated from the Middle Atlas Mountain ranges — one of Morocco’s most storied regions of traditional woodcraft. Every detail across the entire surface is hand-carved, telling the story of a culture whose artisans have worked cedar for centuries. The old age of the wood is visible throughout the entire panel: the deep espresso patina, the worn iron hardware, the centuries of use that have only deepened the character of every carved surface.

Design

The door is carved from edge to edge with no surface left plain — a dense all-over composition of geometric triangle and cross-hatch Berber motifs covers the outer frame and door leaf, punctuated by multiple carved panel zones:

• Horseshoe arch surround — a full Moroccan horseshoe arch frames the upper door leaf, its molding edged with fine dentil bead carving
• Arcade arch frieze bands — multiple horizontal bands carry repeating carved arcade arch motifs with column capitals, referencing the great riads and medersas of Moroccan architecture
• Central key-and-arch symmetrical panel — the dominant middle panel features a bold symmetrical carved composition of paired arch and key motifs with flanking X-cross carved squares
• Lower twin arch panels — the lower section carries two further carved arch panels, completing the vertical rhythm of the composition
• Traditional iron lock and ring pull — the original hand-forged iron lock plate with key escutcheon and iron ring pull handle remains intact — fully functional
• Small wicket door — a small door within the main panel can be opened inward — a traditional Moroccan feature for ventilation and communication
